Explain the rise of political violence in the northeastern part of India.

a. North-Eastern region is very diverse as compared to Indian mainland. Northeast comprises of seven sisters [Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya] states plus Sikkim. Almost all of these states have witness violence in their past. There are many reasons for why these states are not yet able to integrate fully with mainstream population of India, but following are few reasons why this isolation of the region led to political violence in the northeastern part of India-

b. Historically, mismanagement by the Britishers in this region alienated the people here even more.

c. Britishers forced the natives to replace their food crops with cash crops and large plantations farms.

d. Migrant labourers were brought in huge numbers by Britishers to work on these tea plantations etc.

e. The influx of the migrants created a sense of insecurity in the native’s mind, because they did not want to part with their scarce resources and livelihood avenues.

f. Even after independence, the central leadership was not sensitive to the demands and autonomy of the tribes here.

g. Borders were drawn without taking into consideration the consensus of the ethnicity and geography of this region. This led to many violent incidents, civil wars, riots etc

h. This region is connected to mainland India by a narrow strip of corridor (Siliguri), thus making it even more difficult for the movement of people, ideas and commodities.
