5. Patterns

Binni and Ginni were going home. On the way, they saw some people making the pavement. The titles used were of different colors and designs. This is what they saw.

On reaching home they saw their mother’s sari hanging on a rope. It also had a nice design with different colours.

Two girls are looking at a saree, hanging from a rope. It has leaves drawn on its borders.

In the evening, they were playing in a park. They saw iron grills on the boundary wall.

A pattern made by iron grills on the boundary walls of a park. The pattern has curves on the top and the bottom and a shape like barfi in the middle.

Looking at the grills, Binni said — these same grills make a different pattern in our windows at home.

A pattern made by some curves and barfi shape in the window of a house.

We see many such patterns around us – on tiles, clothes, durries.

  • Bholu has eaten a part of the shawl of Binni's mother.

Look at the picture and help Binni in matching which piece is of the same pattern.

A pattern using four small four sided figures arranged together is drawn on a piece of paper, a part of the paper is torn by a mouse. Some pieces are given to be matched with it.

  • Madhav wants to make a pattern on a gate using A shaped formed by a straight line and an arrow on its top and two curves, one on each side. .

Can you guess which of these cannot be formed with this?

Five different patterns are given, out of which four are formed using the figure given above.

  • Fill up the blank boxes to complete the pattern.

Leafy Patterns

Using one leaf, we can make different patterns. See these five leafy patterns.

In the first row, first a leaf is placed straight then upside down and then the pattern repeats. The second row starts with a leaf placed straight, then it is turned to right and the pattern repeats. The third row starts with a leaf placed upside down and tilted towards the left and then it is straight and tilted to the right and then the pattern repeats. The next row shows one leaf placed facing the left and then the next leaf is placed facing the right and then the pattern repeats. The last row shows a leaf placed downwards and tilted to right and the next leaf is facing downwards and it is tilted to the left and then the pattern repeats.

  • Now you also make some patterns with arrows in your notebook.

  • Look at the patterns and fill up the boxes.

There are some patterns in rows. The first row shows a circle, then a square, then a circle, then a square and then blank space. the second row shows an arrow pointing up and then the pattern is repeated. The third row shows one dot in the first box, two in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth and then blank space. The fourth row starts with two arrows pointing up and then two arrows pointing down, then again up, then down, then there is blank space. The fifth row starts with an inverted triangle, then two dots, then a triangle, then again two dots and then blank space. The sixth row shows a brown rectangle, then a rectangle half colored yellow and half brown, then the pattern repeats and after that is blank space. The last row shows the upper half of a circle, then the lower half of the circle, then the pattern repats and then there is a blank space.

  • Now, you also make patterns using different shapes and colours and show them to your friends.

Number Patterns

Let us look at some patterns with numbers. Fill the number in the blank space of each pattern.

Some numbers are inverted triangles. Number one is written in the first triangle, number three in the second, number five in the third, number seven in the forth and the next triangle is blank.
1, 3, 5, 7

Numbers are written in spaces between grills. Number twenty is written first, then thirty, then, forty, then fifty, then sixty, then seventy, then there is a blank space.
20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70

Some numbers are written on shells. Twenty four is written on the first shell, twenty seven is written on the second shell, thirty is written on the third, thirty three is written on the fourth, thirty six is written on the fifth and the sixth shell is blank.
24, 27, 30, 33, 36

Some numbers are written on flowers. Number five is written on the first flower, ten on the second, fifteen on the third, twenty on the fourth, twenty five on the fifth, thirty on the sixth, seventh flower is blank, forty is written on the eighth, ninth flower is blank, fifty is written on the tenth and eleventh flower is blank.
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50

Encourage children to identify the patterns. Discuss with them various other possible number patterns.

  • Titu frog jumps over two numbers and reaches the third number. Where will Titu go next? Make a ring on the other numbers.

A frog is jumping on a ring, which looks like a snake. The ring has numbers written on it from one to twenty five in small divisions.

  • Titu jumps and gets on every 10th stone. Write the numbers on the stones.

Numbers are written in a sequence in rocks at a gap of ten, The first one is blank, the next number is twenty eight, next is thirty eight and after that all are blank.

Teachers note: Ask children to make more such patterns on their own.

Ketu has made some patterns by collecting leaves.

The sequence begins with a broad leaf in the center and one narrow leaf on its side. Then the pattern is placed upside down and then it is repeated.

The sequence begins with placing four leaves, one leaf up, one leaf down, one to the left and one to the right. This pattern is first placed, then the same pattern is placed downwards, then the pattern is repeated.

  • Now, you also collect some leaves and arrange them in different patterns. Also draw patterns using matchsticks.
