A cat is asking another cat that how many beads Razia and Reema took together.

How many beads are taken by Razia and Reema together.                .

Encourage children to make groups of 10 using materials like beads, matchsticks, buttons etc. These concrete experiences will help develop their understanding.

There are two necklaces drawn in front of Razia's and Reema's names and some beads too. A cat is saying, Razia has one necklace, and two beads. Reema has one necklace and seven beads.

In the form of an addition sum, at ones place, a bead is drawn and a necklace is drawn at the tens place. The first number written is twelve and the next number is seventeen. A cat is also drawn.

Right! You can write it like this.

Two cats are talking to each other about the total number of loose beads, counting them and then writing the total in the addition sum.Two cats are talking to each other about the total number of loose necklaces, counting them and then writing the total in the addition sum.

Two cats are talking to each other that Razia and Reema have two necklaces and nine beads in all or twenty nine beads in all.

Practice Time

  • How many beads are taken by Razia and Sonu?

Razia has one necklace and two loose beads and Sonu has three necklaces and five loose beads. In the sum, at the ones place, there is a bead drawn and two and five are written. At the tens place, there is a necklace, and one and three are written. There is a blank space for writing the answer.

...............  beads are taken by Razia and Sonu.

One Extra Necklace

Beads taken by Reema and Aarif –

Reema has one necklace and seven loose beads and Aarif has two necklaces and four loose beads. In the sum, at the ones place, there is a bead drawn and seven and four are written. At the tens place, there is a necklace, and one and two are written. There is a blank space for writing the answer.

Two cats are talking to each other and counting the loose beads together and the total is eleven.

The cats are counting the loose beads to get the total.

The cats are counting the loose beads to get the total and adding the digits at the ones place and at the tens place.  .

The cats are counting the loose beads to get the total and adding the digits at the ones place and at the tens place and the result is forty one.

The cats are discussing that Reema and Aarif have four necklaces and one bead in all, forty one beads in all.

An ant is saying that if Aarif gives three to Reema, Reema will have twenty. Aarif will have twenty one. So twenty plus tenty one is equal to forty one.

Can you do it some other way?

Add by writing and also without writing

How many beads do they have together?

There is a bead drawn at the ones place and a necklace at the tens place. In front of Arif, twenty four is written and in front of Razia, twelve is written. There is a blank space for writing the sum. There is a bead drawn at the ones place and a necklace at the tens place. In front of Reema, seventeen is written and in front of Sonu, thirty five is written. There is a blank space for writing the sum.

There is a bead drawn at the ones place and a necklace at the tens place. In front of Sonu, thirty five is written and in front of Asrif, twenty four is written. There is a blank space for writing the sum.   There is a bead drawn at the ones place and a necklace at the tens place. In front of Arif, twenty four is written and in front of Razia, twelve is written. There is a blank space for writing the sum.

C) How many more beads does Simar have than Reema?

seventeen is subtracted from thirty one to get the result by drawing necklaces and loose beads of Simar and Reema.

By drawing necklaces and loose beads, cats are explaining to count the result.

Cats are explaining step by step subtraction

Cats are explaining to subtract seventeen from thirty one, by crossing the extra necklaces and loose beads.

Cats are explaining to subtract seventeen from thirty one, the result is fourteen.

Two cats are saying that Simar has one necklace and four beads more than Reema.

In this chapter, the standard algorithms for addition and subtraction have been explained using some examples. However, it should be emphasised that learning only algorithms does not help to develop children`s conceptual understanding of the operations. For this, it is important to give them many word problems and encourage them to find out alternative ways to solve them.

It's Time to Buy!

A girl is talking to a shopkeeper, that this time she has to buy eight pencils and five erasers.

The man is saying that the pencils cost rupees sixteen and the erasers cost rupees fifteen.

There is a ten rupee note and six one rupee coins. Below it, there is one more ten rupee note and five one rupee coins. There is also a girl saying sixteen rupees means one ten-rupee note and six one rupee coins.

The girl has written sixteen and fifteen in the form of an addition sum.

The girl is counting the digits at the ones place first, that is coins.

The man is counting and telling her that there are three notes in all, since the sum is thirty one.

The girl is saying that she has to pay rupees thirty one but she has forty.

The man has subtracted thirty one from forty and the girl is saying that she will get back ........ rupees.

Children should draw and make their own play money. They could be given different exercises and games which involve simple calculations.

Practice Time

Shekhar has 32 rupees. He bought a ball for 17 rupees. How much money is left with him?

An ant is saying that if I take away two coins from thirty two and two coins from seventeen, I will be left with thirty minus fifteen.

Soni bought biscuits for 24 rupees and a packet of chips for 16 rupees. How much money will she pay?

Twenty four is added to sixteen and a girl is saying to try doing it without adding it.
Fantoosh had 64 rupees. He spent 39 rupees at the fair. How much money is left with him?

Sixty four is subtracted from thirty nine and a boy is saying to find a way to do it without writing.
