14. Birds Come, Birds Go

Few children are in a park, in which there is also a waterbody. There are some birds in water and some are flying. The children are counting the total number of birds.

Hey! There are 25 birds here.

Look up! Look up! Some new birds are coming.

A boy is saying that lets count the birds using cards. The children have used a square card with number ten on it for a group of ten birds.A boy is using six triangle shaped cards with number one written on each card for a group of six birds.

There are six triangular cards and one square card, making a total of sixteen.Children are discussing that where do these birds come from.?

This could be a good chance to initiate a discussion about migrating birds coming from far- off places. Also encourage and help children to recognise patterns in which different birds fly.

Soon 25 more birds flew in. Let us add to see how many birds in all there are now.

For 16 + 25 we write:

Sixteen is added to twenty five. There are ten squares and six triangles in front of sixteen and two squares and five triangles in front of twenty five.In the sum given above, ten triangles are crossed and it is written putting all the ones together, we get eleven ones of those, ten ones make ten and we are left with one ones. In the above sum, there are four squares and a triangle and it is written, Now putting together all the tens, we get four tens.

So, the total number of birds is 41.

In chapter 8, children would have made token cards. The same token cards should be used before children do written sums.

How Many Cranes and Swans?

There are three sqaure cards and nine triangular cards drawn in front of thirty nine. There are three square cards and one triangular card drawn in front of thirty one.

In the same way, we will add the number of swans and cranes.

Also try adding without writing.

Total number of swans and cranes is ....... .

A lot of birds are flying in the sky.

A number is to be subtracted from another such that the result is sixty seven.A number is added to another number such that the sum is seventy five.A number is added to another number such that the sum is forty nine.

More such exercises can be done to make children see how any number can be made using different combinations of numbers by addition and subtraction.

Cross Me Out!

A boy is sitting on a floor with some blank square boxes drawn on a board.A girl is sitting on the floor and there is a board on which some numbers are written like forty, thirty eight, thirty seven, fifteen, twenty eight, thirty six, twenty four, fourteen, forty nine, forty eight and forty two. A woman is saying to cross a number by adding twenty seven and twelve.A girl is sitting on the floor and there is a board on which some numbers are written like forty, thirty eight, thirty seven, fifteen, twenty eight, thirty six, twenty four, fourteen, forty nine, forty eight and forty two.

27 + 10 = 37 and plus 2 is 39.

Parents can help children in playing this game. Call out simple addition sums like 18 + 4. Gradually proceed to more challenging additions. Also give children turns to speak out numbers while parents do the crossing out. Similar games can be used for subtraction as well.

A girl is sitting on the floor and there is a board on which some numbers are written like forty, thirty eight, thirty seven, fifteen, twenty eight, thirty six, twenty four, fourteen, forty nine, forty eight and forty two.
