The threshold wavelength of a metal is λ0. Light of wavelength slightly less than λ0 is incident on an insulted plate made of this metal. It is found that photoelectrons are emitted for some time and after that the emission stops. Explain.

Since, photoelectric effect takes place and free electrons present in the metal are emitted. This emission of free electrons is for some time and after that the emission stops. This is because all the free electrons from the metal are now exhausted and the energy of the incident light does not have enough energy to move out the tightly bounded electrons in the metal.
