What are the merits and demerits of the Green Revolution?

the merits of the green revolution are :

a. The utilization of these high yielding variety seeds started to show immediate productive results hence termed as a revolution.


b. The area covered in this revolution was narrow. it was confined mainly in states UP, Punjab and Haryana. It is only gradually that it spread to West Bengal, Assam, and Kerala.


c. The food crisis faced by the nation during the 1960s was resolved due to the revolution. As agricultural productivity rose sharply.


The demerits are :


a. Green revolution widened the disparity in income among the rural population.


b. The increased use of pesticides made the crops resilient to it. It also hurt the health of farmers too.


c. Large farmers were able to meet the expense of the crops and pesticides hence it benefited them, but poor farmers who did not have enough were left behind.
