in 1950 planning commission of India was set up with Prime Minister as its chairman. The planning commission would have five-year plans with focusing on components like growth, modernization, self-reliance, and equity.

The major outcomes of the early phase of planned development were :


a. Large developmental projects were undertaken like the construction of huge dams like Bhakra Nangal in Himachal, Hirakud in Orissa for irrigation and power generation.


b. Industrial developments were seen. Steel plants, oil manufacturing plants, etc were set up to focus on the principle of self-reliance.


c. Infrastructure for transport was developed, resilient roads were constructed all over the nation to provide a medium for connectivity.


d. The archaic system of zamindari was finally abolished, which eased farming for tenants.


e. The green revolution led to an increase in productivity and hence established food security for the nation.
