What is the Ayodhya dispute?

Babur invaded India in 1526. On his advice, his General Mir Baqi built a Mosque after demolishing a temple and named it Babri Masjid. This land was, for hundreds of years, the bone of contention between Hindus and Muslims. Many riots took place for this issue. Muslims claim the place as their place of worship, while Hindus claim that this is the place of birth of Lord Rama and the mosque should be in another place. Eventually, in 1992 the disputed structure was demolished by a violent mob. This was followed by a series of communal violence in India.
