Describe the points of consensus that emerged among most political parties in India in spite of severe competition and conflicts.

Despite the ideological difference between the coalition partners, the consensus appears to have emerged among most of them. We get to see this broad agreement in following instances-

Although there were certain groups who opposed the new economic policy, almost all coalition partners supported it and believed that these policies would lead to prosperity and status of economic power in the world for India

Political parties showed maturity and accepted the political and social claims of the backward castes and showed support for reservation of seats for them in education and employment.

The distinction between the State level parties and central parties has been fast becoming less important. More and more state-specific issues came to the notice of the centre and were resolved accordingly.

The coalition partners put greater emphasis on the pragmatic considerations rather than ideologies during power sharing arrangements.
