What do you understand by balance of power?
In international relations, ‘balance of power’ refers to the posture and policies adopted by a nation or group of nations in order to protect itself from another nation or group. It is done in order to create an equilibrium in power held by the opposing sides. Nations often achieve ‘balance of power’ in two ways –
• by increasing their own power through arms race or through competitive acquisition of territory.
• Through alliances with other nations which add to the power levels.
