India’s neighbours often think that the Indian government tries to dominate and interfere in the domestic affairs of the smaller countries of the region. Is this a correct impression?
• India is the largest country in the South Asian region. Hence given the size it is possible for the its neighbouring countries to feel threatened by its existence,
• However, India has never tried to dominate and interfere in the domestic affairs of the smaller countries of the region.
• At times, it has interfered in the issues of neighbouring countries but only to provide financial assistance for instance in the case of floods.
• Although India does have an opinion on issues happening in the neighbouring states but it has never asserted dominance in their domestic affairs.
• There have been a few instances that is when the IPKF interfered in Sri Lanka in 1987 due to the pressure exerted by the Indian Tamilian community. However, the troops were also immediately withdrawn once they felt that the locals were hostile with the interference.
• Similarly, India did interfere in aiding Bangladesh to become a democracy but only because Pakistan had attacked on the Indian air space and the outpouring of the immigrants on Indian borders as Pakistan was exerting military force on them. Again, this interference was only on humanitarian and economic grounds.
