What is United Nations? What are its main organs?

United Nations is an international organization which was established post World War 2. The motive was to give member countries a platform to discuss and settle disputes rather than resorting to wars.

Any four organs of the UN are-

i) Security Council- It consists of the five permanent member whose decisions are binding as they’ve veto power.

ii) General Assembly- It consists of all the 193 member countries that have signed to be part of UN. Most issues are discussed here to be approved by 2/3 of majority for it to be passed. However, their decisions are not binding.

iii) International Court of Justice- It is based in the Hague, Netherlands and are responsible to settle disputes between member nations. 9 of the 15 judges are elected by the Security council.

iv) Secretariat- It ensures the functioning of the UN. The Secretary General is the head. This organ takes care of activities of other bodies of the UN in different countries and ensures the smooth functioning.
