What do you understand by human security?
● Human security refers to the protection of people more than the protection of States.
● It is a part of the non-traditional view of security and is often referred to as Global Security.
● Human security and state security should be synonyms to each other but a secured state does not automatically mean secure people.
● The protection of its citizens from foreign attacks may be an important condition for the security of individuals but it is not sufficient.
● The primary goal of human security is the protection of individual but there are many differences in what threats an individual should be protected from.
● There are two views regarding this. The proponents of the narrow concept of human security focus on violent threats to the individual.
● The proponents of the broad concept of human security argue that the threat agenda should include hunger, disease and natural disasters because they kill more people than war, genocide, and terrorism.
● In the broadest formulation, economic security and threats to human dignity are also included in human security.
● This concept emerged in the 1990s in response to the Global nature of threats such as global warming, international terrorism and health issues like AIDS and bird flu.
● Since they target human Security at the global level, international cooperation is vital in this case.
