on a frictionless surface, the team players will continuously keep on slipping because the surface will not provide the friction between the shoes/ feet of the players and the surface. The players will apply force on the rope and pull it towards themselves but the force they will apply on the surface will be higher than the force of friction. Hence, they will slip and the tug of war cannot be played on frictionless surface.
