Why was granting titles to men of merit an important aspect of Mughal polity?

Titles were an effective way to create an atmosphere of awe among the audience. They were valued highly both by emperors and courtiers. Mughal emperors used to grant titles to men of merit after they have done something spectacular, both to ensure their loyalty and to give them respect. A man’s ascent in the court hierarchy could be traced through the titles he had during his time as a courtier.
