Explain the reasons for the failure of the Permanent Settlement of the land revenue introduced by the British in Bengal.

Reasons for the failure of Permanent Settlement of land revenue introduced by British in Bengal –

• After 1810s agricultural prices skyrocketed and value of agricultural produce became very high, this significantly increased the income of zamindars but due to revenue being fixed under permanent settlement, the British were unable to claim any share.

• For many zamindars collection of rent from ryots in villages was a big problem, as ryots sometimes deliberately delayed payments. Zamindars could not assert their powers effectively as judicial process was long and tedious.
