The hill stations were important for the colonial economy due to the following reasons:

• Staying at hill stations protected the British from suffering from diseases like malaria and cholera which are common in the plain lands because of the hot and humid weather.

• The hill stations acted as a sanitarium, which was used as a place of rest by the soldiers and also a place to recover from their illness.

• The tea and coffee plantations served the business purposes of the British very well and so they preferred the hill stations a lot.
