Why is the orientation of the portable radio with respect to broadcasting station important?

We know that for maximum flux of electromagnetic waves, the surface on which the waves are falling must be perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave, as if it is not perpendicular then the area through which electromagnetic wave passes will be smaller as it will be a projection of the actual area, thus to maximize the flux the orientation of the radio must be perpendicular to the direction of the broadcasting station.
