Electromagnetic waves with wavelength

(i) λ1 is used in satellite communication.

(ii) λ2 is used to kill germs in water purifies.

(iii) λ3 is used to detect leakage of oil in underground pipelines.

(iv) λ4 is used to improve visibility in runways during fog and mist conditions.

(a) Identify and name the part of electromagnetic spectrum to which these radiations belong.

(b) Arrange these wavelengths in ascending order of their magnitude.

(c) Write one more application of each.

a) i) The electromagnetic wave used in satellite communication is microwave. So, λ1 is the wavelength of microwave.

ii) In water purifier the ultraviolet waves are used to kill germs. So, λ2 is the wavelength of ultraviolet waves.

iii) The leakage of oil in underground pipeline can be detected in X-rays. So, λ3 is the wavelength of X-rays.

iv) Infrared waves are used to improve visibility in runways during fog and mist conditions. So, λ4 is the wavelength of infrared rays.

b) wavelengths in ascending order of their magnitude is given by,

λ3 < λ2 < λ4 < λ1

c) Application of above electromagnetic waves.

Microwave are used in radar and telescope.

Infrared are used for treatment of muscular strain.

Ultraviolet rays are used to preserve food.

X-rays are used for medical diagnosis.
