According to Work-Energy Theorem, the work done by a force acting on the body will result in change of the kinetic energy of the body. Now, in case of internal forces, it will change the internal energy of the body, resulting in changed vibration and rotation of body particles, hence kinetic energy will change. But to change linear momentum we need non zero external force.
