Some washing machines have cloth driers. It contains a drum in which wet clothes are kept. As the drum rotates, the water particles get separated from the cloth. The general description of this action is that “the centrifugal force throws the water particles away from the drum”. Comment on this statement from the viewpoint of an observer rotating with the drum and the observer who is washing the clothes.

If a person is inside a rotating drum, containing clothes then from his perspective he will be in a Non-inertial frame. So, according to Newton’s law of the motion these are valid only in inertial frame. So, for a Non-inertial frame, we should apply pseudo force in

opposite direction, which is in the form of the centrifugal force acting on the water particles forcing them out of clothes.

When the above situation is analyzed from a person who is outside the rotating drum, then he will observe it from an inertial frame of reference, hence, there will be no pseudo force acting, but the centripetal force will be acting inwards. This centripetal force is

unbalanced; thus, the water particles will move always from it by inertial force.
