In a barometer accelerating upwards, the height of the mercury column decreases as the net acceleration of the liquid increases from “g” to “g+a”. Here, the height remains 76cm. This is higher than the ideal height for an accelerating elevator. This can happen only if the pressure in the free surface is higher than atmospheric pressure.
