What is the significance of the title The Accidental Tourist?

The title of the story should be such that it brings out the central theme of the story and gives a hint to the readers about the plot. The author has jotted his own experiences of creating a mess wherever he went and in whatever he did. He gets confused even about very simple things.

While pulling the zip forcefully in order to open the bag, his finger was gashed which is why his finger started bleeding. He was utterly confused and panic-stricken.

Bill Bryson’s airplane journeys have always been a catastrophe. Once, when seated, he leaned over to tie a shoelace and the person in front of him threw his seat back into full recline. He managed to get himself freed by clawing the leg of the man seated next to him.

Once while travelling on a plane, the author was writing some important thoughts in a note-book. He was sucking thoughtfully on the end of his pen. Just at that moment, he saw an attractive lady and started talking to her. He didn’t notice the leakage in his pen. It was only when he retired to the lavatory did he discover that his teeth, gums, chin, tongue and mouth were in navy blue.

All these incidents indicate that wherever the author went he met with some or the other accident. Hence, the title is apt.
