A student heats a beaker containing ice and water. He measures the temperature of the contents of the beaker as a function of time. Which of the following would correctly represent the result? Give justification for your choice.

Initially the temperature would be zero since the ice and water are in equilibrium state. When heat is applied the energy is used in melting the ice and the temperature does not change until whole of the ice melts because of the latent heat of fusion. On further heating, the temperature of water would rise.
