Take the samples of alcohol and carboxylic acid in different test tubes and add some sodium hydrogen carbonated in both the tubes.

Carboxylic acid reacts with sodium hydrogencarbonate to give brisk effervescence of carbon dioxide gas but alcohol does not react with sodium hydrogen carbonate.
