How are the lungs designed in human beings to maximize the area for exchange of gases?

Each lung receives a bronchi which divide into bronchioles. These bronchioles further end in large number of alveoli. Alveoli are small, round balloon like structure, that are further connected with veins and arteries. These alveoli have larger surface area and need less volume hence they provide a large surface thus maximizing the area for exchange of gases.
