Gandhiji started his political career in South Africa.


The Black people and Indian Residents of South Africa were subjected to injustice and tyranny of the British Government. It is Mahatma Gandhi’s socio-political advent in South Africa in the period dated 1893-1914, that lead to the arrival of justice for these oppressed inhabitants of South Africa. He leads these people to the path of Satyagraha.

The peasants started a no-tax movement in 1918 in the district of Kheda.


Constant famines had led to massive crop failure in the Kheda district of Gujarat. The local government had imposed land revenue taxes on the poor peasants of this region. Since, it was impossible for them to pay the tax as they were mounted with poverty and losses, they started a “no-tax” movement in 1918 in the Kheda district. Gandhiji accepted the leadership of this movement and soon enough the government waived the tax.

Rabindranath Tagore returned the title of Sir conferred on him by the British.


Tagore returned the title of Sir as a form of protest against the inhuman act of the British, which led to the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in Amritsar on 13th April 1919. So later in the year 1919, Rabindranath Tagore renounced this knighthood which was given to him by King George V in 1915.
