Give reasons for the following observations: The smell of hot sizzling food reaches you several metres away but to get the smell from cold food, you have to go close.
Particles of matter are continuously moving and they possess kinetic energy. With the increase in temperature, particles move faster. As a result, the kinetic energy of the particles also increases. We are able to smell food because of the process of diffusion of gases. These gases are released by the food due to the presence of volatile substances. In case of hot food, the particles of food have more kinetic energy which results in the increase of rate of diffusion. Hence, the smell of hot sizzling food reaches us from several metres. We have to go close to cold food in order to smell it because the rate of diffusion of gases is very slow.
