Liquids generally have lower density as compared to solids. But you must have observed that ice floats on water. Find out why?

Ice is a solid but its density is lower than water because of its structure.Ice is formed by the freezing of water. When water freezes to form ice, the molecules of water makes a cage like structure with a lot of vacant spaces. These vacant spaces are not present in liquid water. Due to the presence of some empty spaces, density of ice becomes less as compared to water. As a result of its lower density than water, ice floats on water.
