Air around us is transparent due to which we can see the objects like trees, buildings, etc. But when the thick smoke, clouds, dust is present in the air than it does not remain transparent because dust, smoke etc absorbs the light. For Example during sandstorm we can’t see things due to dust present in the air.

The figure below shows the air mixed with smoke which makes it translucent we are not able to see buildings clearly.
