Living organisms depend on soil for food indirectly. Plants need soil for support as well as getting nutrients to prepare their own food. Living organisms obtain food from plant products so indirectly living organisms depend on soil for food.

Organisms living in water are not totally indepenedent of soil as a resource. Thes organisms depend on aquatic plants for food. These plants in turn require nutrients which they receive from soil nutrients brought by water runoff.
