What are the desirable agronomic characteristic for crop improvement?

If we develop those varieties of crops which contain desired agronomic traits (e.g., high yield, dwarfness, early maturing etc.) then it will lead to higher production. Thus, tallness and profuse branching are desirable characters for fodder crops. Dwarfness in cereals are preferred, so that less nutrients are consumed by these crops. Dwarf varieties of cereals also provide protection from lodging.
