The prime reason for melting of Gangotri glacier is global warming which is caused by rapid increase in industrialization, burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. Global warming is increasing average temperature of earth gradually. Melting of glaciers is normal but it is due to this increase in temperature that glaciers are melting more than they actually should.
