It is transferred in the form of chemical energy. The producers capture the energy present in sunlight and convert it into chemical energy which is passed into onto other trophic levels. This means that when primary consumers eat plants they are able to turn up only 10% of food for their own body and the rest is lost in the form of heat. And this 10% of nutrients only are available for the next level of consumers.
