Why bakelite is used for making electric switches?

Bakelite is a condensation polymer formed from the condensation reaction between phenol and formaldehyde.

• Bakelite is a very good insulator of electricity and at the same time, it is also a poor conductor of heat. So, it is used for making the outer cases of the switches as it will not give an electric shock to the person who operates the switch in case of surge currents or overloading.

• Since Bakelite is a poor conductor of heat it also used for making the handles of various cooking utensils. The insulating properties of Bakelite make it a preferred option as material for making electrical switches.
