It was a system of bonded labour on the basis of a contract widely used in the plantations. In Vietnam, they were used for rubber plantations and for cultivation in the Mekong River delta region. Their conditions were not good because they worked on a contract basis that did not provide them with any rights. The conditions where they worked were unhygienic. Their work was tremendous and they were paid low wages.
