Petroleum is the second most important energy resource after coal in India. Digboi in Assam also known as the Oil City is the oldest oil-producing centre in India. Crude oil was first discovered here in the late 19^th century, and the first refinery was established here as early as 1901. The first oil well was also drilled here and is still in operation.
