How do homologous organs help in determining the evolutionary trend?

Homologous organs are the organs present in different organisms which have the same origin but perform different functions. Examples of Homologous organs include wings of bat, wings of birds, dolphin, flipper and human arm. By observing them we can conclude that they all have the same origin and during the course of evolution they started performing different functions as per their needs and requirements. They all are derived from the same set of bones which are humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals and phalanges but now all of them function differently.
